Accessibility

Works for more people. On more phones.

Kurukoo works on chat, voice, Telegram, WhatsApp and USSD. The web app aims to meet WCAG 2.2 AA, and we want to hear where it does not.

Effective 23 October 2026 · Version 1.0

What we aim for

WCAG 2.2 AA, on the web.

The web app is built with semantic HTML, labelled controls, keyboard focus and colour contrast that does not rely on colour alone. Icon-only buttons carry an accessible name. Animations respect the reduced-motion setting.

Text uses relative sizes, the layout reflows to 320px, and keyboard focus is visible. A release is checked with a keyboard and a screen reader before it ships. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA. It is a target and a work in progress, not a claim that every screen is perfect today.

Channels

Text, voice, USSD.

  • Chat: the web app, Telegram and WhatsApp.
  • Voice: speak in English or Pidgin; the assistant asks one question at a time.
  • USSD: built and testable on our side — the menus run on the same assistant. Feature-phone dialing starts when the carrier publishes the short code, and the web, Telegram and WhatsApp all work without an app today.
  • Screen readers: pages and buttons are labelled; forms are keyboard-navigable.
Known gaps

Where we are still working.

Some older screens and the operator console have not yet had the same accessibility pass as the marketing pages and the chat. Some documents are PDFs rather than HTML. Video guides are silent and captioned in text beside the player, not with a full subtitle track.

We are fixing these in order of impact. If a specific screen blocks you, tell us and we will prioritise it.

Low data, small screens

It should still work.

  • The app is installable and works offline for reading recent chat; it warns when it is offline instead of failing silently.
  • The layout adapts down to small feature-phone browsers, and touch targets stay at least 44 pixels.
  • Country pages list the languages each country speaks, and the auto-detected country hint is dismissable.
  • Nothing important is conveyed by colour, icon or animation alone.
Tell us

A barrier is a bug.

Email hello@kurukoo.ng with 'Accessibility' in the subject. Say what you were trying to do, the device or browser, and what happened. If you use a screen reader or voice control, tell us which one. A person reads it, and we will tell you what we changed.
